Banned after Claude identity verification: what Anthropic says next

Last updated: · Independent guide

Short answer: Anthropic's help center acknowledges that an account can still be banned after identity verification. The article Identity verification on Claude has a section headed “Why did my account get banned after verification?” Passing the check does not make the account safe. The compliant next step is the official ban appeal form linked from that article — not middlemen or workarounds.

This page only summarises Anthropic's official wording and adds neutral summaries of recent X posts that describe bans right after verifying. Where the official pages are silent, we say so.

What Anthropic says

Anthropic does not say that completing verification causes a ban, and it does not publish a rate or typical cause list for post-verification bans.

What to do after a ban

  1. Don't open a new account to dodge the ban. The Terms prohibit that.
  2. Submit the official appeal. Prefer the ban appeal form linked from the identity article, or sign in at claude.ai/restricted per Safeguards warnings and appeals. Writing tips: appeal guide.
  3. Export data if you need it. Free/Pro/Max users can usually still sign in to export or delete data (some data may be restricted depending on the violation).
  4. Paid plans: check refund eligibility. Termination for a violation is generally non-refundable; see the refund guide.
  5. Still stuck on the verification flow itself? Use the identity verification help form. Never send ID photos to anyone offering to “verify for you”.

FAQ

Does passing identity verification cause a ban?

Anthropic does not say that. The identity article has a section headed “Why did my account get banned after verification?” and lists bans for repeated Usage Policy or Terms violations among other reasons. Passing the check does not mean you cannot be banned. Source: Identity verification on Claude.

Does Anthropic admit bans can happen after verification?

Yes — the help center acknowledges bans after verification and links an appeal form. It does not say the check itself is the ban reason, and ban notices usually stay high-level.

Which form should I use if I'm banned after verifying?

Use the official account ban appeal form linked from the identity article, or sign in at claude.ai/restricted as described in Safeguards warnings and appeals. See our appeal guide.

How long do appeals take, and what's the success rate?

Official pages give no review timeline. For Anthropic's transparency figures on overturned appeals, see our appeal success-rate notes (ratios we calculated from Anthropic's counts, not an official rate).

Can I get a refund if I was banned after verifying on a paid plan?

The Consumer Terms say that if access is terminated for a violation, you are generally not entitled to a refund. Paths differ by purchase channel — see refund policy and refunds after a ban and Request a refund.

Can someone else verify or appeal for me?

No. Verification needs your own ID and a live selfie, and the Consumer Terms require correct, complete account information. We don't publish workarounds or middleman channels.
